Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications and Social Marketing Officer will support the implementation of the communication plan and strategy. The Communications and Social Marketing Officer will work closely with other members of the staff to profile and promote the domestic and global work of the organization consistently with the brand and tone of the organization, while appropriately tailoring communications to specific intended audiences. This will include translating complex information in areas of health promotion, policy and advocacy into accessible and compelling audience-specific communications using traditional and new media tools. The Communications and Social Marketing Officer will be primarily responsible for building the organization’s social media and web presences and will contribute to the research and production of the organization’s communications materials, including as they relate to the organization’s social marketing work.
Statement of Qualifications
- Degree in a related field; advanced degree considered an asset.
- Minimum of 2 years working in Communications in the NGO sector or at the grassroots level.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, succinct and compelling manner, both orally and in writing.
- Strong oral and written communications skills in English and French (essential).
- Experience working on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues.
- Demonstrated experience with policy engagement, research and health promotion with an international and/or national NGO or at the grassroots level.
- Knowledge of international human rights, particularly in areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights, and/or knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Canadian context.
- Experience working with allies and other representatives from the NGO sector.
- Experience translating complex materials into accessible documents and resources.
- Experience working with representatives of the media. Having an established network of media contacts considered an asset.
- Experience with a variety of web based communications tools, including the development of online campaigns and other social media in a professional context.
- Knowledge of social marketing and experience working in design and execution of social marketing campaigns.
- Experience developing and maintaining websites using content management software (including WordPress) and Google Analytics. Knowledge of HTML considered an asset.
- SEO and PPC (including Google Adwords) experience and knowledge considered a strong asset.
- Graphic design experience and ability to use Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences on issues such as race, class, age and ability and their intersection with sexuality and gender.
- Experience with fundraising communications considered an asset.
- Understanding of the role charitable organizations in Canada can play in the policy landscape.
- Demonstrated commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

- Develop and support communications on the work of the organization, including successes and issues of interest for different audiences.
- Develop and distribute updates for social media, newsletters and email listservs.
- Support a strengthened, diversified and increased audience engagement with the organization using a variety of online and traditional communications tools.
- Support the writing and editing of op-eds, press materials, policy positions, briefs, reports and statements on issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Provide support to the Director of Communications on media requests and relations.
- Support Director of Communications in optimizing website infrastructure where needed to support the hosting of different organizational outputs.
- Support other team members in ensuring quality and values-alignment of all communications, including social marketing outputs.
- Work alongside team members and web developer on organization’s website and social marketing campaigns.
- Support the delivery of public information and awareness campaigns.
- Manage the organization’s web and social media presences and those of affiliated networks coordinated by the organization with regular quality content updates and activity.
- Work with Director of Communications, Technology Coordinator, and external consultants to evaluate web and social media analytics and to make decisions about appropriate platforms.
- Assist in the coordination of translation and graphic design work, including conducting translation and graphic design work when needed.
- Support the development of promotional materials for the organization, including fact sheets, fundraising material, infographics, and other web and print resources.
- Participate in staff meetings and other meetings as required.
- Support the Director of Communications with other tasks, as needed.
