Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights is excited to announce the winners of the 2021 Helen and Fred Bentley Awards of Excellence: South Shore Sexual Health, Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) Manitoba, and Sexual Health Network of Quebec.

We received strong, compelling applications from organizations and groups across the country who are making incredible impacts in their communities. Despite the roadblocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s applicants have found innovative and creative ways to ensure that sexual and reproductive health and rights are not left behind.

Here’s more about this year’s winning programs:

1. South Shore Sexual Health took first place for their TransFORMATION Closet, which offers free / pay-what-you-can gender-affirming gear to anyone who needs it.

2. Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) Manitoba took second place for their Knowledge Into Action program, a capacity-building and prevention initiative that increases knowledge and reduces risks around HIV/STBBIs among African newcomers.

3. Sexual Health Network of Quebec took third place for The Teachers Tool Box, a collection of classroom activities designed to teach Quebec’s sexuality education mandatory content, from Kindergarten to Grade 11.

About the Helen and Bentley Awards of Excellence

The Helen and Fred Bentley Awards of Excellence recognize sexual health innovation and leadership in communities across Canada.

Action Canada is proud to count South Shore Sexual Health, Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) Manitoba, and Sexual Health Network of Quebec among our Associate Organizations. Our Associate Organizations and partners are changemakers in their communities helping shape and mobilize our movement to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, these organizations have been leading the way in adapting their service offerings quickly to respond to emerging needs in their community. We are constantly inspired by this boundary-pushing work that directly contributes to stronger, healthier communities where people can access their sexual and reproductive health and rights.
